Mornington Island, also known as Kunhanhaa, is the largest of the 22 islands in the Wellesley Islands group, situated in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. The island is approximately 444 km north of Mount Isa and 28 km off the coast of mainland Australia.

The island is home to around 1,200 residents, predominantly of Aboriginal descent, with the Lardil people being the traditional custodians. Other Indigenous groups, including the Yangkaal and Kaiadilt peoples, also reside on the island.

The main settlement, Gununa, is located on the southwestern coast of the island. The Mornington Shire Council governs the island, overseeing local services and infrastructure. Recent developments include new visitor accommodation, social housing, and community facilities aimed at improving living conditions and supporting cultural initiatives.

Mornington Island boasts a rich cultural heritage, expressed through traditional art, dance, and language. The Mirndiyan Gununa Aboriginal Corporation manages the MIArt Centre and the Mornington Island Dancers, promoting local culture and providing artistic opportunities.

The island's climate is tropical savanna, with a distinct wet season from December to April and a dry season from May to November. Average annual rainfall is approximately 1,198.7 mm, with temperatures ranging from 25.8°C in July to 33.3°C in November.
